The heart of the Australian Flavour website comes from a book compiled over the past year. Many people have claimed that Australia has no cuisine of its own. It is a claim, which is clearly disputable in modern times.

 

This book contains a unique collection of information, and more than 150 Australian recipes. Many recipes are historical, iconic, or both. All recipes, regardless of where they may have originated, are now a part of Australian cuisine. They are meals that we have grown into as a nation, full of flavours that have fused together, influenced by a diverse cultural society.

 

Edward Abbott, the Author of Australia’s first cookery book, wrote in 1864, “We like these quaint old customs and ceremonies and hope they will always be kept up in the old country."

Abbott was referring to Christmas pudding, and like Abbott, Australians have never lost their early heritage, they have added to it.

I just love Australian Flavour: Traditional Australian Cuisine by S L Robards. It's a well written and well presented compilation of Australian recipes, with some colourful history behind them. A must read for any Australian cook (or for the expatriate wanting to have a flavour of home in their new home!). Excellent work!
